The Organising Committee of the PCD Annual Research Meeting awarded the Best Research Highlight Presentation to Leonie Schreck for her presentation on “How frequent are pulmonary exacerbations in primary ciliary dyskinesia?”. The PCD Annual Research Meeting is a large international meeting focused on PCD basic, clinical, epidemiologic, and translational research, which is co-organised annually prior to the European Respiratory Society Congress, by BEAT-PCD, an international network co-chaired by Myrofora Goutaki from ISPM Bern, and by ERN-LUNG PCD core.
Leonie Schreck presented data from 661 participants from the Living with PCD study, an international participatory cohort study hosted at the University of Bern. Using longitudinal data from more than 17,000 questionnaires collected over a two-year period, she estimated the incidence of pulmonary exacerbations in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) to be 3.0 per person per year. Women and people in whom Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated had more exacerbations. These results emphasize the importance of close follow-up examinations for women and systematic eradication of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
