Research Group: Cardiometabolic Health

Our researcher group is focused on the aetiology of cardiometabolic disease including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and their associated factors such as dyslipidaemia, hypertension and obesity. We are interested on the role of lifestyle factors (e.g., diet, physical activity and sleep) on maintaining optimal cardiometabolic health and preventing cardiometabolic disease, as well as in identifying the underlying mechanisms. In order to understand the pathophysiology of cardiometabolic disease and target new biomarkers and pathways for prediction, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cardiometabolic disease, we investigate the common genetic, epigenetics and microbiome pathways cardiometabolic disease share, and identify mechanisms of actions of several drugs used in the treatment of cardiometabolic disease. In addition, to improve cardiometabolic health in women, we look how women-specific factors such as menopause and other reproductive factors affect the risk of developing cardiometabolic disease. Our research is mainly based on large population-based cohort studies, health care registries and in evidence synthesis.
