Christina Schindera receives the venia docendi

Christina Schindera

15.07.2025 – We are delighted to announce that Christina Schindera has been awarded the venia docendi (habilitation) for her research on cardiovascular health in survivors of childhood cancer.

Christina Schindera is a pediatric hematologist and oncologist at the University Children’s Hospital Basel and has been part of the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine since 2016, currently as a senior researcher. Her research focuses on long-term cardiovascular health after childhood cancer. She initiated and leads the CardioOnco Study, a multicentric cohort study embedded in five university and cantonal hospitals in Switzerland.

The CardioOnco study invites adult childhood cancer survivors for a comprehensive cardiac assessment including a heart ultrasound, electrocardiogram, exercise testing and questionnaires on health behaviours. The study aims to identify risk factors for cardiovascular disease and to develop methods for detecting early signs of cardiac impairment. This knowledge will enable timely diagnosis and help to establish interventions to improve and maintain survivors’ long-term quality of life.

Christina’s work is a vital contribution to the growing field of pediatric cardio-oncology, and we warmly congratulate her on the well-deserved habilitation.
