David Schwappach honored with Patient Safety Leadership Award

20.03.2026 – The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) is proud to announce that Professor David Schwappach has been awarded the Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Leadership Award in February 2026.

The Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Award honors a volunteer, individual, team, or organization who has significantly impacted the field of patient safety through critical analysis, research, education or knowledge dissemination. This award is named in honor of Robert L. Wears, MD, MS, PhD, for his pioneer work in patient safety. Dr. Wears was a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville and transformed the way investigators approach patient safety research.

«I feel deeply honored and grateful to receive this recognition for my research in patient safety,» says David Schwappach. «It brings powerful motivation to pursue rigorous research that questions conventional thinking and directly addresses the safety challenges clinicians face.» Professor David Schwappach and the ISPM directorate extend their gratitude to the FMH for their continuous support and contribution to patient safety research at ISPM.
