Researchers from the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine will participate in the new National Centre of Competence in Research NCCR-CLIM+. The Swiss National Science Foundation has approved four years of funding to ETH Zürich and the University of Bern.
A core objective of NCCR CLIM+ is to foster cross-disciplinary communication and actionable knowledge by developing “storylines” of self-consistent, plausible futures that integrate the physical and social dimensions of extreme climate outcomes.
At the ISPM, Prof. Ana Vicedo Cabrera and the Climate Epidemiology and Public Health research group will contribute by providing the human health and climate dimension. In particular, the team will lead the research on the impact of weather extremes on human health in Switzerland. The studies will align with specific storylines attached to extreme events such as devastating heatwaves or floods that could potentially lead to a substantial health impact (i.e., hospitalizations, accidents) and the collapse of the health care system.
By bringing a human health perspective to this newly established NCCR, the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine highlights the critical interface between public health research and climate sciences in Switzerland. We look forward to inspiring collaborations!
